Replacing Your Beauty Products with Dunja

Does your makeup accumulate overtime to the point that you could have your own boutique in your home? Do you still use expired products without realizing it? Do you buy duplicates because you don’t remember if you have a specific product? We’ve all done it at some point or another, for whatever reason. Our on-hand makeup artist and friend, Dunja Kisin, shares her simple organizing tips and explains when it is the best time to replace your makeup and beauty products.

In Dunja’s house, she organizes all her cosmetics in clear containers inside of her furniture. This helps you visibly keep tabs of your inventory. After she maps out the space, she groups like items together. On top of her counter, she stores her most used and favorite lipsticks. In the top drawer, she keeps her palettes due to spacing and the drawer size being the most shallow. Her middle drawer contains all of her lip products and eye products and the bottom drawer holds all of her complexion products, since it is the deepest drawer, and prevents anything from falling out.

Expired makeup… we all have some. Never use expired makeup because it can damage your skin and there is potential for side effects. Always read the labels. Your skin is your largest organ and it is more important to save your skin than your wallet.

Expiration Dates

  • Foundation: 6-12 months

  • Concealer: 1 year

  • Blush: 1-2 years

  • Eyebrow Pencil: 1 year

  • Eye Shadow: 1-2 years

  • Eye Liner: 3-6 months

  • Mascara: 3 months

  • Lipstick & Lip Liner: 2 years

  • Nail Polish: 1 year

Generally, products have a little symbol on the back or bottom of the packaging that may have an image of a jar or bottle with the expiration date in months from the time of opening. If there is no expiration printed on the product, and it smells funky or is crusty, your best bet is to dump it and replace it with a new one.
